NMAI Artist Leadership Program Part 6: First Plane Ride, and The River Inn

We hadn't flown in nearly twenty years when we boarded the tiny jet at DFW for the nonstop flight to D.C. Only a few nerves at take off, and then we enjoyed the Google Earth style view behind the wing.

Now you see it...

...now you don't
After our safe flight, we spent a couple of nights in Chantilly, going to the Congressional Cemetery and Mount Vernon that weekend. I caught a cold the very first morning, but did my best to ignore it.

Those first few days we had a rental car, and said goodbye to Hotel One before making the harrowing drive through D.C. for the first time. After getting lost to see more of the city, we made our way to the River Inn. Lovely accommodations, and a lot of it. A full suite with...well, see for yourself.

Christmas time lit our way back each night
Most days (and nights) someone was there to open these doors for us. Talk about pampering
A queen bed each. Oh so comfortable. Made it difficult to leave each morning after so few hours spent in them
The kitchen where we prepared breakfast every morning, and packed a lunch
Not just for eating at, this served as our workstation and catch-all for the essential items we needed before heading out: camera bag (with contents), jackets, backpack loaded with Metro pass, hotel keys, billfolds, umbrellas, lunch, bottled water, Kleenexes, cold medicine, and of course, the ever important laptop.

Our evening work station where we curled up to send out emails to coordinate last minute details of the next day, design  presentations, upload pictures and perform back ups of irreplaceable material. Often, we fell asleep here before dragging ourselves to bed for a proper, if short, rest

After checking in and unloading the first night at the River Inn, Lynda Kay braved the drive alone to return the rental car to the airport, finding and navigating the Metro all the way back to the hotel, and walking the blocks to the River Inn after dark. All this in sacrifice for me to stay indoors and doctor my cold.

We had a grand adventure ahead, and no tiny jet, or cold, or fear of purse thieves on the Metro would stop these country girls from making the most of sixteen days in D.C..

More to come!

Sarah Elisabeth
