NMAI Artist Leadership Program Part 5: MSC National Anthropological Archives

In the National Anthropological Archives, we photographed hundreds of original documents from the time period of our study focus, the Choctaw Removal, otherwise known as the Trail of Tears.

What treasures are in here? Sarah Elisabeth opening yet another box of the dozens we examined and photographed at the NAA

Here, we only had to wear gloves when handling photos to prevent smudges

So many wonderful old documents to peruse. We have yet to sort and examine each one, but they are saved for when we are ready

When we were able to take a document from its protective plastic sheet, Lynda Kay handled it oh so carefully, and replacing it took time and focus.

With so many boxes to sort through, we made a list of the folders we photographed for double documentation

Two days and over 1,200 photos taken later, we said our goodbyes to the NAA and the MSC. Time for the next segment in our adventures.

Chahta Siah,
Sarah Elisabeth
